Ajax splits neatly into two eras. The 1970s to 1990s neighbourhoods north of the 401 typically have plywood subfloors that have been through thirty-plus Ontario winters, so an uncoupling membrane is essential before any tile goes down. The newer builds south of the 401 tend to have flatter, more consistent subfloors, which makes them good candidates for large format tile.
