Large format tile is the current standard for good reason: fewer grout lines make a room calmer and bigger, and there is less to clean. It is also the least forgiving tile to install.

Why it is harder

The subfloor must be flat within 1/8 inch over 10 feet
Every tile needs back-buttering for full mortar coverage
Medium-bed mortar, not standard thinset, or the tile sags
Levelling clip systems on every joint to control lippage
Two people to place each piece

Why it costs more to install

The extra is labour and preparation, not the tile: levelling, back-buttering, clips and two people on every piece. The tile cost calculator shows the difference for your floor.

How to spot a bad quote

If a quote for large format tile is the same as for standard tile, the installer is planning to skip back-buttering or levelling clips. You will see the lippage within a week.

  Ultra Renovations did a great job for our home floor.   Demolition of original floor all done in one day and clean up.   Floor installation was worked on everyday on time until completion.  Bathroom toilet and vanity installation looked great.  Floor looks amazing.  Very professional job.

  I needed contractor with expertise to fix the many issues  I had from a prior renovation that started in January 2020. All that could go wrong did went wrong, and to avoid a repeat of these issues I spoke with many contractors. Some did not even wanted to touch the work, thought is was too complicated to fix, but Ultra Renovation didn’t hesitate. They reviewed the solutions with me, and their pricing was also quite reasonable compared to others. They surely didn’t disappoint. The kitchen backsplash one of my favourite tiles in the renovation is now a pleasure to look at. They fixed the stair, level and re-installed the flooring and replaced the backsplash and got it all done in time. Sometimes I can hardly believe the chaos is finally over. Thanks UltraReno.
