Planning – ULTRA RENO https://www.ultrareno.ca Renovations & Master Tile installer Wed, 14 Oct 2026 11:13:07 +0000 en-US hourly 1 200681167 The Best Time of Year to Renovate (It Isn’t Spring) https://www.ultrareno.ca/best-time-to-renovate/ Thu, 30 Jul 2026 03:59:15 +0000 https://www.ultrareno.ca/best-time-to-renovate-ontario/ Most people book renovations in spring, which is exactly why spring is the worst time to book one. Interior tile work does not care what the weather is doing, and the winter months have real advantages.

Availability

Between May and September every good contractor in the GTA is booked solid, largely with exterior work that has to happen in warm weather. From January to March, schedules open up. You get better crews, sooner, with more attention.

Lead times on materials

Suppliers are quieter in winter. Special-order tile that takes six weeks in June often arrives in two or three in February. If you have your heart set on something that is not a stock item, this matters.

It is interior work

Tile, bathrooms, kitchens, basements — none of it depends on outdoor conditions. The only winter consideration is keeping the space above about 10 °C while mortar and grout cure, which is not an issue in a heated home.

You are indoors anyway

A bathroom out of action for a week in February is less disruptive than the same week in July when you have people over and the yard is in use.

Ready for spring

A kitchen or bathroom finished in March is a kitchen or bathroom you enjoy all summer, rather than one you are living around.

The one genuine winter drawback

Dust control is harder when you cannot open windows. We manage it with plastic containment and negative-pressure fans, but it is worth knowing. If someone in the house has respiratory sensitivity, mention it when we quote and we will plan around it.

What we would still not do in winter

Exterior tile, pool surrounds, or anything involving mortar below freezing. Those genuinely need warm weather.

If you are planning a bathroom or kitchen renovation for next year, booking a winter slot usually means more choice of dates and a crew that is not rushing.

Flooring a Damp Basement: Why Tile Works and What It Needs https://www.ultrareno.ca/basement-flooring-damp-basements/ Thu, 30 Jul 2026 03:59:15 +0000 https://www.ultrareno.ca/basement-flooring-damp-ontario/ Basements have their own rules. Concrete slabs release moisture for years, sometimes decades. They are rarely level. They are colder than the rest of the house. Flooring specified for an upstairs room will fail down here.

Test the slab first

Before anything goes down, the slab needs a moisture test. The simple version is taping a 2-foot square of clear plastic to the slab and leaving it 72 hours — condensation underneath means active moisture. For a proper number, a calcium chloride or relative humidity probe test gives a measurement rather than an impression.

Why porcelain is the right answer

Porcelain absorbs 0.5 percent water or less. Slab moisture, a leaking washer, a spring thaw backing up a floor drain — none of it damages porcelain. Compare that with engineered hardwood or laminate, which will cup and delaminate, or carpet, which will hold moisture and grow mould.

What the installation needs

  • Crack isolation. Slab cracks are normal. They also move. A membrane isolates the tile from that movement.
  • Levelling. Basement slabs are poured to drain, not to be flat. Self-levelling compound is almost always needed, particularly for large format tile.
  • An uncoupling membrane rated for below grade.
  • Consider heating. A basement floor is cold whatever you put on it. In-floor heating is the difference between a finished basement and a used one.

What drives the cost

Slab preparation is the main variable. A badly out-of-level slab can need a lot of levelling compound before any tile goes down. We moisture-test and check the slab at a free visit and price it in writing; the tile cost calculator gives a ballpark.

If the basement actually leaks

Fix that first. No flooring system solves a water ingress problem — it just hides it while the damage continues. Address grading, downspouts, weeping tile or the crack itself, then floor it. We will tell you honestly if we think that is what you are looking at.

Are Heated Tile Floors Worth It? An Honest Answer https://www.ultrareno.ca/heated-tile-floors-worth-it/ Thu, 30 Jul 2026 03:59:14 +0000 https://www.ultrareno.ca/heated-floors-ontario-worth-it/ Between November and April, a tile floor in an Ontario bathroom sits at around 16 °C. That is the single most common complaint we hear about tile, and in-floor heating solves it completely.

What goes in

An electric mat system goes on top of the tile cost: the mat, an uncoupling membrane rated for heating cable, and a programmable thermostat with a floor sensor. On a bathroom floor it is a modest addition — the tile cost calculator shows the effect on your floor, and we price it exactly at your free visit.

What it costs to run

An electric mat draws about 12 watts per square foot. A typical bathroom on a timer for four hours a day costs a few dollars a month at Ontario rates. Most people run it on a schedule — warm for the morning and evening, off overnight.

Where it is genuinely worth it

  • Bathrooms. Bare feet on tile at 6am in February. This is the case that sells itself.
  • Entryways. Helps dry salt and meltwater faster, which is a real benefit through an Ontario winter.
  • Basements. Below-grade slabs are cold year round. Heating makes a basement genuinely usable rather than technically finished. See basement renovation.

Where we would skip it

Large open main floors. The square footage makes both installation and running costs add up quickly, and your furnace is already handling that space. Kitchens are borderline — you are usually standing, moving, and often wearing shoes.

The thing people get wrong

Heating mat only goes under open floor area, not under the vanity, the toilet or the tub. So the heated area is always meaningfully smaller than the room. We measure the actual usable area when quoting, which is why our number is sometimes lower than a quote based on room size.

You have to decide before the tile goes down

This is the important part. In-floor heating is installed as part of the tile job. Retrofitting means lifting the entire floor. If you are on the fence, the cost of including it is a fraction of the cost of adding it in three years.
